Ethiopia (info & MAP)

Ethiopia is a very ancient country whose rich culture and history goes back to pre-historic times. Situated in the North-Eastern Horn of Africa, equidistant between the Equator and the Tropic of Capricorn, its bedrock belongs to the earth’s first continent, a continent known by geologists as Gondwanaland, of which Africa forms the largest intact remnant. It is one of the countries with the longest history in the world. ETHIOPIA boasts extraordinary cultural, historical, and natural wealth. Ethiopia has the longest history of archaeological record of any country on earth. Archaeological findings identified Ethiopia as one of the cradles of mankind. The discovery of one of the ancient and most complete hominoids, ancient cave paintings and tools are some of the evidences of its pre-historic glory.

Axum (from 200 B.C to 8 century A.D) was of the mighty maritime sates of the era, whose power was felt far beyond the red sea. With the decline of Axum as a sea power, the center of the states moved further south to LALIBELA, north Shoa and Gondar. Throughout its long history, Ethiopia had to defend itself against foreign invaders lured by its geopolitical position, being at the crossroads of Africa and Asia, by the natural beauty and fertility of the land. It has successfully defended itself from the colonial powers and has become the symbol of hope, independence and freedom for Africa.

Ethiopia is one of the earliest Christian states in the world which officially adopted the Christian faith around 330 AD. It is a country where Christian and Muslim religions have co-existed for centuries. The different peoples, nations and nationalities each with its own language, cultural heritage, crafts and customs make the country a museum to be frequented. The Ethiopian people diverse culture is manifested in the various languages, ways of life customs etc. Amharic, Oromiffa and Tigrigna are the major languages spoken by the majority of the population.

Ethiopia's isolation, along with its unique political independence (it was almost the only country on the continent to avoid colonization), has ensured that its culture has remained remarkably intact, unpolluted and undiluted by outside influence. The country retains its own particular language and script, its own food and drink, its own church and saints, even its own calendar and clock. Endlessly fascinating, it defies any categorization or generalization; it is believed by some scholars that "ETHIOPIA IS THE FOUNTAIN-HEAD and REPOSITORY OF THE HISTORY AND CULTURE OF THE BLACK RACE OF THE WORLD".
